Historical Context
“Battaglia di San Romano” is a masterful series of 3 paintings by the illustrious Florentine painter Paolo Uccello. These paintings, depicting the pivotal 1432 battle between Florentine and Sienese forces, stand as a testament to the groundbreaking development of linear perspective in early Italian Renaissance art. Commissioned by the esteemed Bartolini Salimbeni family between 1435 and 1460, these works have captivated audiences for centuries.
In the 15th century, the paintings were so revered that Lorenzo de’ Medici himself acquired one and secured the remaining two for the illustrious Palazzo Medici. Today, you can experience these masterpieces across three iconic institutions: the National Gallery in London, the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, and the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
Building on this esteemed heritage, contemporary artist Iguarnieri has masterfully reimagined the historical triptych “Battaglia di San Romano.” Utilizing the classic egg tempera technique on wood fresco surfaces, Iguarnieri meticulously follows the principles and methods established by Paolo Uccello, presenting a breathtaking tribute to the Renaissance master’s original work.
