Context
The engraving, “Danza di Apollo con le Muse” reproduces a painting by Baldassarre Peruzzi depicting Apollo dancing with the Muses (circa 1510-1520), accompanied below by a cartouche with their names written in Greek characters. The inscription erroneously includes the name “Raphael,” with whom Peruzzi indeed collaborated. As for the engraver, it is believed that he may be identified as Blanchard Auguste Jean Baptiste Marie, although it cannot be excluded that it might instead be the engraver Blanchard Auguste Thomas Marie (1819-1898).
